The biggest shift to Emma’s own teaching of writing came when she began to write seriously herself. Not only do teachers become authentic writing models for students when they write beside them, but they also model lifelong learning and intellectual risk taking. Emma will help teachers gain confidence in their own writer voices as they engage in the rewarding work of developing a writing life. Emma structures the workshop using strategies and techniques that teachers can take back to their own classrooms. Together, they’ll explore the powerful ways that one’s own writing can change the classroom for the better.

Best Paired With A Student Workshop

In addition to conducting workshops herself, Emma will offer guidance to teachers developing their own writing workshop practice. During pre- and post-workshop conferences, Emma will help teachers unpack the decisions that went into planning and conducting a writing workshop lesson and/or unit, and help teachers plan future follow-up lessons.
